Omicron – New Government Guidelines for PCR test within 24 hours of entry into the UK

A new variant of coronavirus which was first identified in South Africa, called Omicron has now been detected in the UK. Scientists fear that this variant may not be as responsive to vaccines as previous ones, and potentially maybe even more infectious. Whilst scientists study this new emergence, the UK government has imposed new guidelines to help control the spread of infection, to try and keep everyone safe.

If I have been double vaccinated, can Omicron still infect me?

Very little is still unknown about this new variant as it is still being studied by scientists, however, there is evidence to show Omicron can spread between people who have been double vaccinated.

When will the UK government guidelines change?

From 30th Nov face coverings will once again become mandatory to be worn on public transport and in shops.

Who needs to wear masks?

Face coverings are also, “strongly advised” for secondary school students in England whilst in communal areas. Staff and visitors to any childcare or school facilities are also strongly advised to wear face coverings.

What do if you think you may have been exposed to Omicron

Anyone who thinks they may have come into contact with Omicron will need to self-isolate for 10 days, even if they have been vaccinated.

Travel Implications: what to do if you are entering the UK after 30th Nov

From 04:00am Tuesday 30th November anyone coming into the UK will need a PCR test within 48 hours of arrival. They will need to self-isolate until they have a proven negative result. If the PCF test result is positive, self-isolation must continue for 10 days. This includes visitors from outside of the UK, but also applies to UK residents if you are going abroad and returning home for any reason.

Entry into the UK Overview

  • PCR Test within 48 hours of entering the UK

  • Must self-isolate until a result is received.

  • Negative result - may leave self-isolation.

  • Positive result – must continue self-isolation for 10 days

What about traveling outside of the UK - have more countries been added to the red list?

Yes, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, Angola, South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho, Eswatini, Zimbabwe and Namibia have been added to the red list.

Do I have to go to a clinic to get tested?

No, you can order your test kit online from PExpo diagnostics. In doing so you can protect others by limiting your contact until you know you are COVID-19 negative.

Is another lockdown in England likely?

The government currently has no plans to impose another lockdown, however, it is important that the UK public continue to take precautions to control the number of cases, and the pressure on the NHS.

How can we do our bit to help control the spread of COVID19?

The best way to do so is to get tested, especially if you are going to crowded places, or spending time with vulnerable people such as the elderly. Anyone with a positive COVID19 result should immediately self-isolate to help slow down the spread of this variant.
